Red River is a small ski town nestled in the southern Rocky Mountains about 2 hours north of the state capital, Santa Fe. It is home of the Red River Ski Area and offers family -friendly activities year-round.
Getting to Red River is a scenic drive through the mountains. There is one Main Street in Red River with just a few other side streets throughout the town. It is a very small town, but it is packed with charm.
The downtown area has several restaurants and shops. The Red River Community House offers many fun activities throughout the year. While we were there, we played a competitive game of BINGO!
There are many rental options in town. We stayed in a room in the building photographed below with the red roof. It was a great location and worked well for us. We enjoyed that we could see the ski lift from our room!

One of the main activities to do in Red River even in the summer is to ride the ski lift. It takes about 30 minutes each way, but the trip to the top is beautiful as the view only gets better as you climb upward. It is fun to explore the area at the top and take in the views.

We paced ourselves and spread out exploring the town over a few days. Unfortunately, that meant we didn’t see the signs and find out about the Michael Martin Murphey Chuckwagon until the last day of our trip, and they were already sold out. We later found out this is a very popular activity and wished we had been able to attend.
In town, there is a beautiful park – Toni Woerndle Memorial River Park. It turned into a nightly tradition to walk the river, take in the view, look for wildlife, and take a few photos. It was a great way to unwind for the day and enjoy nature.

We saw several deer and got close to the wildlife for some great photos. Between the nature scenes, wildlife, and flowers, there were many beautiful sights.

Red River is close to several nearby towns that make for great day-trips. The largest nearby town is Taos, but Angel Fire is also close-by and could be a fun day-trip!
